By Anna Jacoby
Hey guys! I'm Anna. I've survived three years at Ida Crown (and I hope to survive this one too), and I think you will be able to do the same. Here are some tips to help you adjust to this new environment, and please don't be afraid to ask questions and reach out to teachers, older students, or anyone else - you deserve all the tools you need to be successful!

Freshman year should be a really fun year. Take advantage of all the opportunities the school offers you and make the best out of this year! I hope these tips will not only help you survive, but also thrive!
Strategic Tips for Strategic...
... West-Civ Students:
- Don't be afraid to ask Ms. Sennett to record her! (Especially for speed West-Civ - they don't call it that for nothing!)
- Don't copy down the PowerPoints, instead take notes on what she says - that will be more helpful when studying for tests.
- Use hannah.dimbert.net when studying for the tests - it has useful study guides that cover the material thoroughly.
- Find a study buddy! It is so helpful to have someone test your knowledge or explain a topic you are having trouble with.
- Most importantly - DON'T STRESS! West-Civ is a fun class that needs to be taken seriously, but also needs to be enjoyed.
... Bio Students:
- Take thorough notes on the textbook, but make sure to have room to add what you learn in class, or even have separate notebooks for class notes and textbook notes.
- Pay attention to how the labs connect to the material - the labs will often help you figure out the answers to questions on tests.
- Do not over-think test questions. Although they seem complicated, the test questions are straight forward and do not trick you.
- Make a note about the analogies Mr. Newman teaches. When you are going over your notes, it can be helpful to see an analogy that aids you in understanding a topic. That way, you will have a better grasp on the material.
- Don't be afraid to go to Mr. Newman for help during lunch or free, and be sure to eat all the pasta he makes!
... and Efficient Freshman:
- Space out homework that is due at a later date throughout the weeks, so you do not have to do it all in one night.
- Reward yourself a few times while you are working by taking breaks, going on your phone, etc... This will allow you to re-charge and continue working with energy.
- Do not keep your phone in the same room that you are working in - hearing the "ding" or "buzz" from a text message or Snapchat will tempt you to go on your phone instead on finishing you work.
- Get a head start on your homework during lunch or a free, so you are not swamped with work at home.
- Make sure to get a good night's rest each night, so you can approach each day with energy and enthusiasm!
