Israel’s Borders
This summer, Israel has managed to continue the relative peace along the Gaza border. With Syria being occupied in a civil war, the Syrian border remains peaceful as well. Although Syria may not be the one of the more current concerns of Israel, Hamas is still a big threat even with the 30 months of peace. Israel is commencing new construction plans for the fence along the borders of Gaza and Israel. The new plans for the heavily fortified fence may spark an action from Hamas on the offensive. The updated fence that will surround Gaza will make it close to impossible for Hamas fighters to sneak any entrance into Israel and attack, even though their military efforts have been elevated to pre-war levels. Since Hamas’s underground tunnels have been destroyed by the Israeli Defense Forces and Israel digging their own tunnels, Hamas is turning to aerial warfare by building new flying weaponry and strengthening their Air Force.
With Gaza and Hamas’s changing government officials, it is an inconvenient time for Gaza to start any conflict with Israel. Meanwhile, nothing has been happening and Israel is ready and able to defend.
Inside the Borders of Israel
Within Israel, violent riots located in the Muslim Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount caused an uproar. The riots were urging for the displacement of the new metal detectors that were set up at the entrance and on one of the three holiest Muslim and Jewish sites. The metal detectors and new security precautions were put in the entrance to the Muslim Quarter and Haram al-Sharif after a series of terrorist attacks in the areas. During the riots, the Palestinian president suspended any form of contact with Israel.
The Muslim rioters succeeded with their violent threats to weaken the security at the entrance and the Israeli Defense Minister along with the Police agreed to remove the metal detectors. The riots and Muslim opposition also caused a crisis with Jordan, who aided the Muslims in weakening the security measures.
Terror
The tension between Israelis and Palestinians has been resulting in some malicious and vicious terrorist attacks throughout the last couple months. Many attacks were a result of the assassination (allegedly planned by Israeli forces) of a Gaza official named Mazen Faqha, and the security measures that Israel administered on Muslim sites. There have been attacks targeted toward Israelis in their homes along the West Bank, civilians on the streets, and to Israeli soldiers. Along with many Israeli casualties, there have been Muslim and Palestinian fatalities. Although this seems scary, we, the Jews, must unite and fight off terrorism together.
We, the students of Ida Crown, although far away physically, are still close to what is going on in Israel. The terror has a strong impact on us. The best way we can contribute to this war against terror is to pray and advocate for Israel. We must learn about Israel and stay up-to-date with current events in order to be informed. Once we are educated ourselves, we will be able to educate others on the importance of having a homeland for the Jewish people.
