Since 1932, Israeli athletes and international Jewish athletes have been competing in one of the world's largest sporting events: the Maccabiah games. People around the world watch their country’s athletes’ attempt to win gold medals and set world records in sports like track and field and swimming. This multi-sport event is held every four years (since the fourth Maccabiah in 1953) in Israel.
Modeled after the Maccabiah Games in Israel, the North American JCC Maccabi Games were first held in the summer of 1982 in Memphis with 300 athletes. The games have grown to become one of the world's largest organized sports event for Jewish teenagers with over 6,000 total participants throughout North America and Israel. The JCC Maccabi Games are held every summer in multiple cities throughout North America.
