ICJA Workout Room: is it Really Working?
By Binyomin Krohn
The workout room in Ida Crown is vacant for most of the school day.
There are students who feel that the workout equipment is not helpful to them. Senior Yehudah Carson said, “The workout room is useless because there are no free weights.” Many more people in the school feel the same way because free weights, defined as dumbbells and barbells, are the essentials for most people’s muscle building. Some kids were even more upset because without free weights, they cannot have a good workout, thus requiring them to pay for memberships at community gyms. Associate Principal Mr. Harris said, “The reason for no free- weights in the workout room is to establish a more safer environment. Free-weights tend to be harder to control, making machines a more safer approach.” According to a survey of 20 students, they concurred that the workout room would be much better if there were dumbbells, barbells, a squat rack, a treadmill, mirrors, and a pull-up bar.
There are students who said that the machines are too complicated to use and do not provide the bare minimum for a workout room. Junior Wrestler EJ Halpert said, “What workout room doesn’t have a bench press or squat rack?” Mr. Harris said, “Coach Wax consulted with different high schools in an effort to make the workout room as useful as possible. The school realized that they did not use any student input for the workout rom, but it was too late to reconsider.”
One other reason for the vacancy is due to the strict rules of the workout room. Students need an adult employee of Ida Crown to supervise them while they workout. Most employees are working throughout the day and do not have the time to watch a student work out for an entire period. Junior Sara Perlow said, “It’s as if there is no purpose for the room if we have to go through the extensive process of finding a teacher to supervise us.”
Granting easy access to the workout room can improve the learning experience for many students. Carlson said, “If I’m given easy access to the workout room, I can let out my energy and stress.”
Mr. Harris said, “The school is looking to expand and update the workout room, and make it more accessible to the students.”
